Mrk2 Security - Questions & Answers for
When it comes to security at home or at work, many customers share concerns, there may well be some more information to help you decide on the best security for your house or office here.
Commercial CCTV Security
- What is the difference between a Video Server, an NVR and a DVR?A network video server is a computer that runs special Video Management Software known as VMS and is used to record video from IP cameras. A windows computer is usually the platform for the VMS, and video is recorded onto the computer's hard drives in a special video format.
Sometimes people are confused by this term because a number of years back a device that attached an analogue camera to the networks was also called a video or camera server. This is now known as a Video Encoder.
A Network Video Recorder, or NVR, is a complete IP camera recording device. It includes a computer and special Video Management Software. VMS is required for recording video, but it also allows multiple viewers to monitor real time and recorded video.
The DVR or Digital Video Recorder is a device that records video from analogue cameras to one or more hard drives. The term DVR is also used in the consumer TV market.
The DVR used in the security market has a fixed number of BNC connections to attach cameras. DVRs are available with 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 channels, or connections. This means that you have a maximum number of cameras that can be supported by one unit. Once you exceed the number of connections available on that particular DVR, you will need to add another DVR to your system.
There are some DVRs that can connect to the network and be viewed using a desktop or laptop computer. - What is the difference between a DVR and NVR?There are several differences, some of the major ones being:
The NVR connects to the computer network along with the IP cameras. The main advantage of this is that you can use the existing network infrastructure, meaning you don't have to run wire from a home base location.
The DVR uses coaxial connections to each of the analogue cameras.
The NVR supports high resolution megapixel cameras
The DVR supports only cameras with VGA resolution - What are the differences between a Network Video Service and a Digital Video Recorder? The Video Server and Network Video Recorder are similar in that they both record video. The Network Video Recorder comes with the Video Management Software already installed.
The Video Server does not include VMS. You select the software you like and load it.
The Video Server usually runs on a Windows operating system and it's more flexible than the NVR because it is easier to expand and add cameras. The NVR, on the other hand usually has a fixed limit as to the number of cameras it can support. - Which VMS product fits my requirements? This is where the skill, knowledge and experience of Mrk2 Security comes in.
There are hundreds of VMS products out there each with different features and methods of use. The main job of any Video Management Software is to record the video from many IP cameras on the network. It is very important to select software that's reliable and doesn't crash; the loss of important images can be more than just embarrassing.
It's important to use a dedicated computer system to run the software, ideally a 'server' which has a higher capacity and faster hard drives, processors, more RAM and better networking capabilities.
The various VMS products available have many additional functions, including motion detection, sending special alerts to tell you if something important has happened, flexible displays of real time and recorded video, easy location and display of multiple recorded video channels. To help you choose the elements that will be the greatest benefit to your site security, it is always best to arrange a site survey and security assessment. One port is required for each camera, ideally one that includes PoE on all ports.
- What is PoE?The latest IP cameras get power over the network. This is known as Power over Ethernet or PoE. You can also add a PoE midspan, or a power injector between the switch and the camera.
Using PoE means you only need to run one network cable to each camera making installation easier and reducing costs. - Do I need a Video Switch? No, the LAN network switch operates as the switch allowing hundreds of cameras to be viewed on a network.

Don't let someone tell you what's important to you. Wireless security systems have a lot of options. You don't have to purchase everything that is available when you first get started. Deal with a security company that lets you expand and customize your security so your smart home security system can grow with you. A few points to take into consideration when making your decision should include:
- Life Safety (e.g. smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm, medical alert)
- Environmental Protection (e.g. sump pump, water level, furnace failure, generator running)
- Lifestyle (remote services, phone applications, integration to lights, locks and thermostats)
- Who lives in the home?
- How many adults
- Children>
- Elderly persons?
- Pets?
- What areas do you want to protect?
Security Protection (e.g. doors, windows, motion detection, glass break detection, and more) - Does the alarm sound a siren when activated by an intrude? Most home security systems are designed to have a loud siren detect an intruder. As with all systems you have options between sirens, bells and "silent" systems. A loud siren or bell is a good deterrent but when the property is empty or there is danger of violence, a silent alarm can increase the chances of catching criminals. Modern CCTV systems provide evidence quality images and can be wired into your silent alarm to record when the system is tripped.
- I've heard a lot about "wireless" security devices. Do they really work and do the batteries last long enough?Yes on both counts! Technological breakthroughs have led to the development of wireless electronic security products, and their effectiveness has been proven time and again over the years in millions of installations. With the new advances over the past few years, security systems have never had so many functions, been more dependable, or offer such home automation convenience. Wireless alarm systems not only work, many people add on features like a smartphone app to make sure they use their system daily. Most modern security equipment is powered with lithium batteries that last 5 to 7 years depending on usage. Of course, your system will let you know a long time before they do so you can replace them. If you have any questions, just call or click in the header of any page to send us an email.
- Can I operate my alarm and stay inside my home?Yes! A properly designed home security system allows a separate setting for "at home" or "stay" mode, and "away" functions.
- What's the main difference between wired and wireless alarm systems?A hardwired security system starts with a control panel. Usually located in a closet or a basement, the control panel contains the "brains" of the security system, and essentially operates as a central computer. With wireless security systems, often the alarm panel is the keypad. You can call us on the number shown above, or click in the header of any page to send an email and we will help you assess the options with no high pressure sales angle.
- What does the keypad do?You operate your security system by entering your security code at the keypad. Generally located at entry doors, keypads can arm and disarm with push-button ease, and literally put security at your family's fingertips! With touchscreen keypads, you can control home automation as well as your alarm system, managing heating, lighting, door access times and much more all through one panel or app. The easy way to make sure you remember everything whenever you go out.
- Will my children be able to operate the alarm?Yes! The system can be armed with the press of a button and disarmed with a 4-digit code or key fob. With modern phone managed security systems, you can enable notifications for key events, such as children returning home for the greatest possible peace of mind.
- What are magnetic contacts?Magnetic contacts are two-part devices used to protect windows and doors. One part of the contact is a switch installed in the window or door jam; the other contains a magnet and is placed in the window or door itself. Any noticeable shift in contact with the switch results in an alarm. Magnetic contact switches can be used to protect anything that opens and closes within your premises.
- What is a PIR?A passive infrared motion detector (PIR) is an electronic security device that detects intruders by "sensing" motion or body heat in the area being protected. Most PIRs are designed to be used when your family is away from home or when no one will be passing through the area "covered" by the PIR. Used effectively, they are one of the best pieces of security equipment available.
- I have a dog! Does that mean I can't install a PIR?Absolutely not. Recent innovations in security technology have resulted in the creation of "pet immune" motion detectors-allowing dog and cat lovers to enjoy the same level of protection they would receive with a standard PIR. If you have a large pet you may be better suited for a glassbreak sensor. That's why an initial security consultation is so important. All members of the family must be taken into account when planning a security system, regardless of how many feet they have.
- What is a glassbreak sensor and how do they work?"Acoustic" glassbreak sensors, usually mounted on ceilings or walls, work by "listening" for the sound of breaking glass in a window. "Shock" glassbreak detectors are mounted on the window and "feel" the shock of breaking glass. If an intruder does break through a window, this will trigger the alarm before they are in the home. They can be a great alternative, or compliment, to motion detectors. Just one of the ways to customize your home security system.
